Startup Spotlight – Ultimate Frisbee and how Bump wins – on and off the field.

Bump defeated IMVU in an ultimate Frisbee game today 17-5—which wasn’t surprising as they won game against other startups such as Pinterest earlier this year. On a surface level, this would say that their victories only reflect upon the fitness of the team…but Bump is a winning team on many levels.

Leadership: The team captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team is the CEO, David Lieb, who is fiercely competitive. When he plays Ping Pong in the office, I keep a distance from the table as it isn’t a surprise to see Dave diving for the ball to give a fast hard hitting return. I would not want to be in his way. His focus on achievement and victory reflects throughout his life – he pursues professional goals in a similar manner and he manages the company in a similar way. The company’s 2 week product turns are called “Sprints” – everyone is expected to run towards a goal fast and hard. We respond to our community quickly when a bug is found and all hands are on deck ASAP to fix problems because our focus is our users.

Genius: Our technical leader Andy Huibers is rocket science smart. And I am not saying that because he has some fancy degrees from some elite schools. He can think in a way that many can’t. I love seeing the expressions on peoples’ faces when they download Bump and suddenly I can give them my contact info and some photos by tapping my phone against theirs. They just grin and say “wow, it’s like magic”.

To most, it is magic. The latest version of Bump’s magic is reflected in this KTLA news segment – https://plus.google.com/115271546011421479523/posts/hD4xb8YFPz7. The delight on the expressions of the newscast is an example of why Bump exists…

Engagement within the team and our community: Our team is engaged with their work because our environment encourages entrepreneurship within the company. We host periodic hack-a-thons where everyone is encouraged to choose a project and work on it. We also have “Bump labs” where people can propose trying to create an application out of the Bump platform; hence, Bump Pay and PhotoBump. We have some other cool projects in the queue, which I wish I could discuss. Our engagement with our users is a high priority. We constantly bring in our users for testing and feedback. We have a fabulous design team whose focus is that our users should love our product.

So, every reason for our success mentions our users at the end because they are the reason why Bump exists and why we will succeed. Bump will hit 100M downloads soon. Obviously, we have created a product that many want. Our victories are not limited to the field but we will be victorious in our company’s mission to change the way that people use their phones. We will win a revolution.
